When attempting to lose weight, you can't separate diet from exercise.

That's the theory behind Linda Shevlin's Arlington Heights business, Slender Lady. The franchise, at 260 N. Evergeen, uses a three-prong approach to help women lose weight and implement a healthy lifestyle.

First, Shevlin teaches how to stabilize food intake throughout the day in eating many small meals. She said it's essential to balance the blood glucose level so you can burn calories and have extra energy.

Members at Slender Lady receive one-on-one assistance to learn the process. Shevlin added that they also look at why the client eats. Reasons vary from being upset to stress to boredom. "We help you figure it all out," she said.

Strength training is the final component of the equation. Women are able to burn up to 650 calories during a 30-minute strength training and cardiovascular workout, Shevlin said.

"We're not all about looking at the scale," said the owner, who lives in Arlington Heights. She said her business is a lifestyle center that focuses on overall health. "It's not going on another diet," Shevlin said.

Most women joining the facility are in their mid-40s. She said monitoring body fat plays a vital role. Most women joining register 38 to 42 percent body fat. This number should be 20 to 25 percent.

The goal in lowering this number is vital to good health. The business owner said it's often about addressing other issues including high blood pressure, diabetes, fibromyalgia, depression and hormonal imbalances.

The reason for getting into the business was a personal one for Shevlin. After having her daughter, Micayla, four years ago, she was having difficulty conceiving her second child. She saw infertility doctors and wasn't ready for evasive treatment, so decided to work on her own. She followed a healthy lifestyle prescribed in The Infertility Diet book.

Shevlin, a Palatine native, noticed that credible diets often involve managing the blood glucose levels. She focused on an overall healthy lifestyle that included exercise.

After working in sales for the travel industry for 12 years, she decided she wanted to help other women find a healthier lifestyle. Her mother, Eleanor Bryan of Crystal Lake, found Slender Lady on the Internet. "It was a perfect match," said Shevlin of the growing company.

Oh, and in addition to launching the new business, Shevlin is now 12 weeks pregnant.
